I think the employer branding has a good side and a bad side, with the "conjurer's trick" you describe representing the latter.

The good side, however, is that, within an honest branding process, a company really can get a good understanding of "who it is, why it is, and how it wants to be." The company has to realize that branding is not just putting lipstick on a pig, but rather, figuring out that you're a pig in the first place. It's a self-realization process for the company.

After the self-realization comes the decision: do we want to continue in this direction, or is there something we would like to change? If the former, you slap that lipstick on and go looking for the nearest singing frog. If the latter, then the transformation process itself becomes the brand.

Companies that go through a branding process have to realize that it's the process that has the most long-term value, not the brand image that comes out of it.
